IN MEMORY

"Hub"
1933 - 2007

“Hub” was no stranger to railroads. He could tell you some stories from the times he worked as a fitter at the Union Pacific Railroad shops in Council Bluffs, Iowa. 1952 to 1958, those were the days of both the steam and the diesel locomotive. He was one of the founding fathers of the Vines Garden Railroad and a long-standing member of the Georgia Garden Railroad Society. In 2006 he assisted in the assembly of the garden railroad exhibit at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens and acted as a spokesperson for the display during the exhibition.

It will come as no surprise, Hub built and operated his own garden railroad at his home in Lilburn, GA. An experienced craftsman he also built his own scale model buildings and displayed a number of his works at the Georgia Garden Railroad Society shows. One of his most impressive models being that of the Atlanta Terminal station which used to be located at Mitchell and Spring Streets. This being the site where the Richard B. Russell Federal building now stands.

Janice Evens has donated this model to the Vines Garden Railroad and it will be on display at the Gardens on ‘open’ days.

Response to the memorial fund has been extremely good. We thank all of you who have given so generously. Originally it had been intended to list all of the names, of those who donated, here on this page. However it was preferred that a letter of thanks be mailed to all who have contributed.

The proceeds from this fund has being added to those of Hub’s family for the placement of a memorial bench, with an engraved plaque, adjacent to the Vines Garden Railroad Clubhouse.
This being part of a commemorative program offered by the Gwinnett Parks Foundation.

Dedication of this memorial is planned for April 19th. 2008. This will be the same date Vines Garden Railroad Club members host the Georgia Garden Railroad Society meeting.

One of the few people that we know who actually enjoyed being stopped at a railroad grade crossing just to watch the train go by!

A true friend, he will be missed.

Photo memories may be found in our Gallery in the file identified as “Hub”.
